Not a Winter Cat

After several weeks of fabulous weather (being able to ride your bike on Christmas break? Wow!) capped off with temps getting close to 70 degrees, we were all a bit spoiled. Of course, it didn't last. Winter returned soon enough, and we were back to heavy coats, gloves and wishing that the car heated up just a tad bit faster.

It is January in Nebraska, after all. No one could really pretend to be surprised.

At least, the adults and children in the house were not surprised. Our cat, Marmalade, seemed to be caught off guard by this return to cold weather. Since she can't exactly hop a plane to Florida, she is working on alternative means to make it until spring arrives. For example, she now hangs out on top of the heat vents. Never mind the rest of us who might actually be wanting some of that heat to make it into the rest of the room.

There was also one day last week when I was completely convinced that she'd gotten herself stuck somewhere in the house, or even worse than that, had gotten out when we were unloading girl scout cookies from the car. She didn't show up for meal time when we went to feed the cats before bedtime, and let me be clear...this cat never misses mealtime.

Her absence got us thinking...we had not seen her in hours. Normally, the cats chase each other around the house or curl up along side us when we watch TV at night. Manny was there, but the other furball had definitely been missing.

We spent the next 45 minutes, running through the house, opening doors and looking under furniture. She wasn't in the kids' bedrooms or in her usual sleeping spots. We even ran around shaking the kitty treat bag, which normally gets the cats running to us to get treats. (Poor Manny kept following me around, "Hey, Lady. I'm right here. Gimme a treat!")

Finally, we made one last check through G's room. On this last search, he heard us and woke up. We explained that we couldn't find Marmalade and told him to go back to sleep. He looked at us like we'd lost our minds and calmly told us that Marmalade was right there.

She had crawled UNDER his comforter and blankets and was curled up next to him, nice and toasty warm.

They do know how to get warm and cozy, don't they? I'm kind of like Marmalade; I like warmer temps, too, but my mid-January weather is making me think spring is just a day away.

I love that!!! Like Maggie used to do, Fiona loves to crawl up under the blankets on the bed. I have to watch out before I get in bed so I don't sit on her. That pic of Marmalade on the heat vent is so cute!!!
